HILSHA REMAINS BANGLADESH'S BY ALL RIGHTS

Carnivore or a vegetarian, this news will surely make you go ‘Woo Hoo’ as a Bangladeshi!

The national pride Hilsha fish gets international recognition as a unique product of Bangladesh and eventually wins the geographical indications (GI) tag. After Jamdani Saree, this is now the second Bangladesh origin product to get the GI tag after.

Department of Patent, Design, and Trademark(DPDT) informed that all the procedures to register Hilsha as the GI product are done and submitted. It is expected that the certificate of registration of Hilsha as the GI product will be officially handed over to the Department of Fisheries this week.

Following all the formalities and procedures required for registering Hilsha as a GI product of Bangladesh, the government had to publish a journal on Hilsha for further tests and assessments.

The journal got published on June 1, 2017.  The deadline for getting objection ended on July 31, 2017. This was a part of the rules that said if no country raises any objection within two months of publishing the journal, then the product will get the GI title.

GI is a sign used on products with an explicit geographical origin and exhibits qualities or holds a reputation that is due to that origin. And Hilsha, a delicacy which is a part of our identity, no doubt, by all mean adhere to the conditions set and thus excels to remain as Bangladesh's.
