NOTHING HAPPY ABOUT THESE POPSICLES..

It’s easy to convince oneself that one stray packet of chips tossed overboard won’t make much of a difference, that there’s a next-to-no chance of the little chewing gum spat out of making it into the digestive tract of a fish, and hey, even if it did, it’s just one fish among millions right?

We fail to comprehend, what impact even the smallest of our actions can have on the environment, especially when these actions have been piling up over decades.

Three students of Taiwan, like thousands of other environmental activists all over the world, took it upon themselves to put the issue of pollution into perspective, particularly water pollution.

Hung I-chen, Guo Yi-hui, and Cheng Yu-ti, students at National Taiwan University of Arts in Taipei, created a line of popsicles from polluted water, in order to create a statement about the reality of water pollution.

The popsicles, though beautiful and seemingly tasty at first glance, upon closer inspection reveal some a hard truth – that we fail to understand just in how many different ways we tend to pollute water - with plastic, metal, arsenic, mercury, and so on. The project generates a polarity between how good the popsicles look, how awful they may taste, and how damaging they are – instigating the question of what will happen if this water makes its way into households.

The water samples used in the popsicles were collected from 100 different sources in Taiwan, and the samples themselves were very small, further highlighting just how much waste can be contained in even the smallest of amounts. The popsicles were then recreated using polyester resin in order to ensure easier display and preservation.

The award-winning Polluted Water Popsicle has become viral since its release, gaining attention in Taiwan and now, globally as well. The project is proof of how putting problems into perspective can go a long way in raising awareness and helping people realize the consequences of their actions.
