Renowned IP Expert Jay A. Erstling has joined as a member to the Board of Trustees of Bangladesh Copyright & IP Forum (BCIPF) on 12 January, 2017. Jay A. Erstling, a highly accomplished professional in the IPR field, has many milestones in his long career. Mr. Erstling previously served as a Director to the Office of Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT), and was an Adviser to the Director General of WIPO at Switzerland too. He has been instrumental in reforming the PCT policy and expanding and modernizing the PCT system during his tenure at the PCT office and WIPO office.
Mr. Erstling also serves as an advisor and expert witness on PCT, NAFTA and WTO matters for major pharmaceutical manufacturers as well as a consultant to foreign governments on WTO TRIPS compliance issues. Jay A. Erstling is also appointed as a Professor Emeritus at the Mitchell Hamline School of Law, Minnesota, USA and an IP Attorney at the Patterson Thunte, LLP, based in Minnesota.
BCIPF, in a Board meeting held in October 2016, decided to invite Mr. Erstling to join as one of the trustees to its panel which already has number of eminent professionals from Bangladesh. In a recent meeting held in Delhi Mr. Erstling handed over to BCIPF Founder Barrister Hamidul Mishbah, his written consent to the position of Trustee offered by BCIPF.
Marking this occasion, Mr. Kazi Zahin Hasan, Chairman to the Board of Trustees of BCIPF stated that BCIPF believes that Mr. Erstling’s joining as a Trustee to BCIPF and his experience and willingness to contribute for the development of the IPR sector will help us tremendously in developing the IPR regime in Bangladesh, and with his presence BCIPF is now better equipped and well positioned to offer support to the government to decide on joining the Madrid Treaty and the Patent Cooperation Treaty. We expect Mr. Erstling will visit Bangladesh soon.
Manzurur Rahman, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Information, who is also considered as one of the Copyright Law expert in Bangladesh, sees Mr. Erstling's joining as one of the biggest success of the BCIPF Team and thus congratulated the organization for making it happen.
