UNESCO ENLISTS MANGAL SHOBHAJATRA AS INTANGIBLE CULTURAL HERITAGE

Mangal Shobhajatra, the annual Bangla new year procession, finally graces UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list as per the announcement made yesterday. The decision was finalized at the 11th session of the Inter-governmental Committee on Safeguarding Intangible Cultural Heritage held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Arranged by the teachers and students of Dhaka University, Faculty of Fine Arts, the procession has come to symbolize national solidarity and resilience as it unites people to celebrate the spirit of Bangla culture that pulses with diversity. The procession, marking every Bangla New year ever since 1989 with its colorful masks, handmade posters, sculptures and a jovial crowd hailing from all walks of life; was first introduced to instill hope and courage in our nation then suffering from natural calamities and military imposition.

In present times of communal discord plaguing our patriotic spirit, reinstatement of Mangal Shobhajatra as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity will hopefully boost up our national morale while preaching tolerance and empathy towards all.
