Tape for Safety. Protect your Identity

Tape for Safety. Protect your Identity

Did you know that a piece of tape can keep you safer? Not that long ago, Mark Zuckerberg was caught covering the webcam on his MacBook Pro. And people mocked his simple tactics to protect his privacy. Well now his methods are no longer laughable, the director of FBI James Comey, agrees with him. When an expert agrees, it’s high time for us to take things a bit more seriously.

Comey, recently said that it’s a sensible thing that everyone should be doing it. “You go into any government office and we all have the little camera things that sit on top of the screen. They all have a little lid that closes down on them. You do that so that people who don’t have authority don’t look at you. I think that’s a good thing.” he elaborated.

On the other hand ever since the Edward Snowden fiasco, it has been public knowledge that one might never know if their phones and laptops are ever hacked, and any specialized entity from far away can control the speakers, cameras and microphones attached to someone’s devices.

As the world gets more dependable on the internet and technology, privacy is becoming more of an illusion. It is safe to say- What pollution was for industrialization, privacy is for digitalization. It is very possible for a hacker to steal your personal identity. Can you imagine what might happen? What if you have the final draft of you first novel, or the recordings of your own album saved in your Macbook; and then someone hacks into it? Will you have copyright claims on your works? What is the future of your artistic merits?

The laws on intellectual property theft are more or less there. But the problem is beyond the law. It seems that thieves are finding new ways to violate people’s merits and identities. It is not only a matter of what the laws are about. It is vital to know how you keep yourselves protected. Whatever the answers are to the aforementioned questions- we can say that the world is headed towards a very complicated place. Soon enough matters might get so complicated that splitting hair would seem as easy as taking chocolate from a baby.

But for the time being putting a piece of tape on your webcam is a good step towards safety. If the CEO of Facebook and the director FBI are concerned, you can silence you inner “keyboard warrior” and take some real measures for your own good.
