A solo drawing and painting exhibition by artist Md. Mainuddin, titled “Manifestation of the Human” was inaugurated at capital's Alliance Française de Dhaka, Dhanmondi on Saturday, January 2, 2016. Held at both La Galerie & Galerie Zoom, the exhibition was inaugurated by Eminent artist Prof. Rafiqun Nabi, Prof. Abul Barq Alvi, Faculty of Fine Art, University of Dhaka and Prof. Nisar Hossain, Dean, Faculty of Fine Art, University of Dhaka.
The main attraction at Mainuddin’s “Manifestation of the Human” is a massive 8 feet by 75 feet artwork that depicts hundreds of human figures that we come across everyday in Dhaka. This massive artwork, completed in charcoal perfectly embodies the theme of this art exhibition is an amazing treat for the eyes. The sheer size of the this artwork makes one wonder where we fit in this chaos of the city; and on looking closely enough, one can also find a character that they can relate with. The artist chose to work with charcoal because it allows him to create large scale pieces as the one mentioned and also because it is the most basic material that inspired mankind to draw with.
In his words, the artist said, “I want to experience the struggles faced by general people in their everyday life. I observe their turmoil and style of living firsthand, so that I can depict these emotions accurately through an empathic view point”, and it is this thought that gave life to this exhibition.
Apart from the massive artwork in charcoal, the exhibition also features some more paintings that resonate the theme of this exhibition, in bright and life-like colors.
Md. Mainuddin was born in Bhola and completed his B.F.A and M.F.A from Dhaka University with first class honors. The artist has received several awards including Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy Award in 2013, Best Award in Painting in Bangladesh Young Artist Art Competition organized by Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy in 2012 and Grand Prize in Nowab Sir Shamsul Huda Painting Award in 2011.
